14

When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.

When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.

15

As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were filled with awe and ran to greet Him.

And all the people were amazed when they saw him, and they ran up to him and greeted him.

16

“What are you disputing with them?” He asked.

And he asked them, “What are you discussing with them?”

17

Someone in the crowd replied, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a spirit that makes him mute.

One of the crowd answered, “Master, I brought my son to you, for he is possessed by a dumb spirit,

18

Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.”

and wherever it seizes him it convulses him, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth; and he is wasting away. I told your disciples to drive it out, and they could not do it.”

19

“O unbelieving generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to Me.”

He answered them and said, “O you unbelieving people, how long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!”

20

So they brought him, and seeing Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

And they brought the boy to him. As soon as the spirit saw him, it convulsed the boy, and he fell down on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.

21

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has this been with him?” “From childhood,” he said.

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” And he said,

22

“It often throws him into the fire or into the water, trying to kill him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

“From his childhood, and many a time it has thrown him into the fire or into the water, to put an end to him. But if there is anything you can do, take pity on us and help us!”

23

“If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible to him who believes!”

Jesus said to him, “ ‘If there is anything I can do!’ Everything is possible for one who has faith!”

24

Immediately the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”

The boy’s father immediately cried out, “I have faith! Help my want of faith!”

25

When Jesus saw that a crowd had come running, He rebuked the unclean spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” He said, “I command you to come out and never enter him again.”

Then Jesus, seeing that a crowd was rapidly gathering, reproved the foul spirit and said to it, “You deaf and dumb spirit, get out of him, I charge you, and never enter him again!”

26

After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.”

And it gave a cry and convulsed him terribly, and went out of him. And the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said that he was dead.

27

But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.

But Jesus grasped his hand and made him rise, and he stood up.

28

After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

When he had gone home, and his disciples were alone with him, they asked him, “Why could not we drive it out?”

29

Jesus answered, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer.”

He said to them, “This kind of thing can be driven out only by prayer.”
