32

Then they came to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus told His disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

They came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit down here while I pray.”

33

He took with Him Peter, James, and John, and began to be deeply troubled and distressed.

And he took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to feel distress and dread,

34

Then He said to them, “My soul is consumed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch.”

and he said to them, “My heart is almost breaking. You must stay here and keep watch.”

35

Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour would pass from Him.

And he went on a little way and threw himself on the ground and prayed that if it were possible he might be spared the hour of trial,

36

“Abba, Father,” He said, “all things are possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.”

and he said, “Abba!” that is, Father, “anything is possible for you! Take this cup away from me! Yet not what I please but what you do!”

37

Then Jesus returned and found them sleeping. “Simon, are you asleep?” He asked. “Were you not able to keep watch for one hour?

When he went back he found them asleep and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Were you not able to watch for one hour?

38

Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

You must all watch, and pray that you may not be subjected to trial. One’s spirit is eager, but human nature is weak.”

39

Again He went away and prayed, saying the same thing.

He went away again and prayed in the same words as before.

40

And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. And they did not know what to answer Him.

When he came back he found them asleep again, for they could hardly keep their eyes open; and they did not know what answer to make to him.

41

When Jesus returned the third time, He said, “Are you still sleeping and resting? That is enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

When he came back for the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough of this! The time has come. See! the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of wicked men.

42

Rise, let us go. See, My betrayer is approaching!”

Get up, let us be going. Look, here comes my betrayer!”
