Berean Standard Bible
29Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.
Jesus answered, "The first is: Hear, Israel — Jehovah our God, Jehovah is one."
The divine name *kyrios* (κύριος) appears twice in this quotation of the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4), standing in for the Hebrew YHWH in both positions; it is rendered "Jehovah" both times to preserve the identity and unity of the one God being affirmed. The word *heis* (εἷς), meaning "one," is placed emphatically at the end, reinforcing the strict monotheism of the Shema that Jesus here cites as the first and foundational commandment.
