Berean Standard Bible
28Now one of the scribes had come up and heard their debate. Noticing how well Jesus had answered them, he asked Him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
One of the scribes came forward. He had been listening to them debating, and he saw that Jesus had answered them well. He asked him, "Which commandment is first of all?"
The Greek *συζητούντων* means debating or disputing together, capturing the argumentative atmosphere of the exchange. The phrase *ἐντολὴ πρώτη πάντων* is rendered "first of all" rather than "greatest" or "most important," as the Greek *πρώτη* (first) carries its natural sequential and ranking sense, which the translation preserves without smoothing over. "Jesus" is added in [brackets] to clarify the implied referent of *αὐτοῖς* in context — though strictly speaking the source text does not name him here: [Jesus].

King James Version
28And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
Goodspeed New Testament
28One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing. He saw that Jesus had answered them well, and he asked him, “Which is the first of all the commands?”
