35

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and declared, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.”

And Zebedee’s two sons, James and John, came up to him and said, “Master, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36

“What do you want Me to do for you?” He inquired.

He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

37

They answered, “Grant that one of us may sit at Your right hand and the other at Your left in Your glory.”

They said to him, “Let us sit one at your right hand and one at your left, in your triumph.”

38

“You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I will drink, or be baptized with the baptism I will undergo?”

Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking for. Can you drink what I am drinking, or undergo the baptism that I am undergoing?”

39

“We can,” the brothers answered. “You will drink the cup that I drink,” Jesus said, “and you will be baptized with the baptism that I undergo.

They said to him, “Yes, we can.” Jesus said to them, “Then you shall drink what I am drinking, and you shall undergo the baptism that I am undergoing;

40

But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

but as for sitting at my right or at my left, that is not mine to give, but belongs to those for whom it is destined.”

41

When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.

When the other ten heard of this they were at first very indignant at James and John.

42

So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.

And Jesus called them to him, and said to them, “You know that those who are supposed to rule the heathen lord it over them, and their great men tyrannize over them;

43

But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

but it is not to be so among you. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,

44

and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.

and whoever wants to hold the first place among you must be everybody’s slave.

45

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

For the Son of Man himself has not come to be waited on, but to wait on other people, and to give his life to free many others.”
