19

Now there was a rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in joyous splendor.

“There was once a rich man, who used to dress in purple and fine linen, and to live in luxury every day.

20

And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered with sores

and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

and eager to satisfy his hunger with what was thrown away from the rich man’s table. Why, the very dogs came and licked his sores.

22

One day the beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the rich man also died and was buried.

And it came about that the beggar died and was carried away by the angels to the companionship of Abraham, and the rich man too died and was buried.

23

In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham from afar, with Lazarus by his side.

And in Hades he looked up, tormented as he was, and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus beside him.

24

So he cried out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. For I am in agony in this fire.’

And he called to him and said, ‘Father Abraham! take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in torment, here in the flames!’

25

But Abraham answered, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things. But now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.

And Abraham said, ‘My child, remember that you received your blessings in your lifetime, and Lazarus had his misfortunes in his; and now he is being comforted here, while you are in anguish.

26

And besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that even those who wish cannot from here to you, nor can anyone from there to us.’

Besides there is a great chasm set between you and us, so that those who want to go over from this side to you cannot, and they cannot cross from your side to us.’

27

‘Then I beg you, father,’ he said, ‘send Lazarus to my father’s house,

And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house,

28

for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’

for I have five brothers; let him warn them so that they will not also come to this place of torture.’

29

But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let your brothers listen to them.’

Abraham answered, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them listen to them.’

30

‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead, they will repent.’

But he said, ‘No! Father Abraham, but if someone will go to them from the dead, they will repent!’

31

Then Abraham said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

He answered, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead!’ ”
