1

It was now just before the Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.

Before the Passover Festival began, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father, but he had loved those who were his own in the world, and he loved them to the last.

2

The evening meal was underway, and the devil had already put into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.

So at supper—the devil having by this time put the thought of betraying Jesus into the mind of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son—

3

Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.

Jesus, fully aware that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,

4

So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist.

rose from the table, took off his outer clothing, and fastened a towel about his waist.

5

After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him.

Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, wiping them with the towel that was about his waist.

6

He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”

So he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Master, are you going to wash my feet?”

7

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

Jesus answered, “You cannot understand now what I am doing, but you will learn by and by.”

8

“Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him. Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.”

Peter said to him, “I will never let you wash my feet!” Jesus answered, “You will have no share with me unless I wash you.”

9

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!”

Simon Peter said to him, “Master, wash not only my feet but my hands and my face too!”

10

Jesus told him, “Whoever has already bathed needs only to wash his feet, and he will be completely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.”

Jesus said to him, “Anyone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed to be altogether clean. And you are already clean—though not all of you.”

11

For He knew who would betray Him. That is why He said, “Not all of you are clean.”

For he knew who was going to betray him; that was why he said, “You are not all of you clean.”

12

When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His outer garments, He reclined with them again and asked, “Do you know what I have done for you?

When he had washed their feet and put on his clothes and taken his place, he said to them again, “Do you understand what I have been doing to you?

13

You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, because I am.

You call me Teacher and Master, and you are right, for that is what I am.

14

So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.

If I then, your Master and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet too.

15

I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.

For I have set you an example, in order that you may do what I have done to you.

16

Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

I tell you, no slave is superior to his master, and no messenger is greater than the man who sends him.

17

If you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Now that you have this knowledge, you will be blessed if you act upon it.
