Isaiah 53:10

The Suffering Servant

Yet Jehovah was pleased to crush him, making him sick. If his life is made a guilt offering, he will see offspring, he will lengthen days, and the pleasure of Jehovah will succeed in his hand.

*Nephesh* (נַפְשׁוֹ) is rendered "his life" rather than "his soul," following the Pioneer Translation's consistent rendering of this word as life or being. *Asham* (אָשָׁם) is translated "guilt offering," its precise sacrificial meaning in Levitical law — a specific category of atoning sacrifice, not a general term for sin. *Daka* (דַּכְּאוֹ) is translated "crush," preserving the violent physical force of the verb, which tradition has sometimes softened.

10

Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer; and when His soul is made a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.

Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
