14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
The Burning Bush
God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: I AM has sent me to you."
The Hebrew אֶהְיֶה (ehyeh) is the first-person singular imperfect of the verb "to be," meaning "I am" or "I will be." The name God gives himself — "I AM WHO I AM" — is deliberately left in its raw Hebrew form of self-existence and dynamic presence; the repetition is preserved exactly as the source demands. The verb שְׁלָחַנִי (shelachani, "has sent me") is cognate with the concept of being sent on a mission, anticipating the same sender/sent distinction that runs through the whole biblical narrative.
